A museum as large as a city, housing

Isfahan is the third largest city of Iran and for
more than 300 years has been the main attraction for
travelers.
Isfahan has been the capital during the period of
Al-e-Ziar, Al-e-Booyeh, the Siljuks and Safavid
dynasties. The most prosperous time for the city was
during the reign of King Abbas the great of Safavid
who moved his capital from Qazvin to Isfahan. During
his time the city expanded rapidly and many castles,
bridges, mosques, buildings and palaces were put
into construction. Naghshe-Jahan Square which King
Abbas planned to be the centre of the city is the
second largest square in the world. With beautiful
monuments including Royal (Imam) and Sheikh
Lotfollah mosques, Ali-Qapu palace, Bazaar and
numerous shops is the unique masterpieces of
country. Vank Cathedral, Shaking Minarets, the fire
temple (Atashghah), Khaju and Sio-She-Pol Bridges,
The Chehel Sotoon(forty columns) Palace, are some of
the interesting places to visit. |
